Making Tanghulu: A Sticky Sweet Treat

For those who might not be familiar with what is Tanghulu. It's a traditional Chinese snack that consists of skewered and candied fruits. The process of making Tanghulu involves dipping fruits like strawberries, grapes, or hawthorn berries into a hot sugar syrup, creating a crunchy and sweet shell. The result is a dazzling treat that's both a feast for the eyes and a delight for the taste buds.

Making Tanghulu

Ingredients You'll Need:

  • Fresh fruits (strawberries, grapes, hawthorn berries, or any of your favorites)

  • Wooden skewers or bamboo sticks

  • 2 Cups Granulated sugar

  • 1 Cup of Water

  • Ice Cold Water

Step 1: Preparing the Fruits

Begin by selecting your choice of fresh fruits. It's important to pick fruits that are firm and can hold up to the candying process. Clean and thoroughly dry the fruits before skewering them onto wooden sticks. This step alone is visually appealing, as the vibrant colors of the fruits contrast beautifully with the sugar coating.

Step 2: Creating the Sugar Syrup

In a saucepan, combine granulated sugar and water, then heat the mixture until it reaches the hard crack stage, 300 F. Don't Stir the Mixture! The syrup will transforms into a glossy, golden caramel that will coat your fruits.

Step 3: Dipping and Cooling

Dip each skewered fruit into the hot sugar syrup, ensuring they're evenly coated. Dip them in the ice cold water and  lined them on some parchment paper until harden.
